Enable Basic And Commtouch Engines

Enable Basic Spam Scanning

The “Configuration” tab under Email -> Antispam allows for basic settings and actions for spam filtering.

In the first area you can enable or disable the built-in antispam engine for SMTP and POP protocols. [Fig.1]
Important! The SMTP proxy and/or the POP proxy must be enabled, otherwise no scanning is performed because the appliance has no means to intercept the emails.

The second area allows you to specify the actions taken “If email is Spam”; as illustrated in Fig. 1

Configuring Commtouch Engines

Syneto integrates two Commtouch engines which provide an advanced solution in repelling spam and viruses. The two engines are:

  • GlobalView Mail Reputation
  • Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak

To enable the Commtouch engines, use the Email->Antispam menu (it has been placed for convenience here even though it is bivalent, having antispam and antivirus components). Under the ‘Commtouch Security status’ section you can find information on the status of the updates for Commtouch’s two engines. The update is enabled automatically when you install the Commtouch licenses.

[Fig. 2] – Enable Commtouch Engines Panel

The GlobalView Mail Reputation engine acts during the incipient phase of the SMTP protocol, classifying the IP of the server sending the email. It has a built in greylisting service and it is very efficient in stopping resource wasting by rejecting malicious email deliveries very early on. ‘Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak’ has two components, one that evaluates the virus threat of the email and another that evaluates the spam level of the same email. If the same virus is found to be a spam and a virus, the email is automatically placed in the quarantine (default behavior when a virus is found), overriding any actions set in the ‘If email is spam’ section under the Email->Antispam menu. If ‘Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak’ engine finds an email to be spam, the actions set under the ‘If email is spam’ will be applied to the email.

Warning: Note however that the antivirus or antispam functionality of the ‘Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak’ engine may be turned off when the corresponding functionality isn’t active for the protocol in cause. For example if antispam is disabled for SMTP but antivirus is enabled for the same protocol, ‘Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak’ engine will continue to classify viruses but will not take any action if the email in cause is found to be spam.

Warning: If a user has only the POP proxy active, the ‘GlobalView Mail Reputation’ service won’t run because it depends on the SMTP protocol. However, the ‘Antispam and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak’ will continue to function properly.
